the fortification, a small square, was needed so that the students of a nearby school could properly observe the 'dia da bandeira' - the day of the flag, a brazilian celebration created in 1889 in honor of the country's flag.

it was at this moment that the beach was renamed praia da bandeira - beach of the flag.

brazil's national flag was adopted on november 19, 1889, and it is designed as a green rectangle with proportions of 7:10, with a  yellow diamond inside a blue circle, and crossed by a white label with the words 'order and progress', as well as twenty-seven white stars.  arrow-back     arrow-forward
