ilha do governador is a very important neighborhood in rio de janeiro in terms of trade, industries and its developing economy. the island, which used to be decades ago a beach resort for middle class cariocas, features now the characteristics of a big city. praia grande (big beach) is located in the northern section of the island, in a section called campo da ilha do governador, that since 1946 is only accessible to the brazilian navy.
