ilha do boqueirão is the most well-known of these islands and is situated just 500 meters from ilha do governador. the island was formerly known as ilha do coqueiros (coconut island) due to coconut plantations there in the early nineteenth century, and was also previously known as ilha do boqueirão dos mineiros - it houses the brazil's navy ammunition centre. ilha do rijo, ilhota aroeiras, ilha das palmas, ilha rasa, ilha mestre rodrigues, ilha manoeis de dentro, ilha d'água, and ilha da mãe maria are all very small islands that are situated to the east of ilha do governador, across from praia de guanabara and praia da bandeira.
