Mass competitive runs are regularly organized across the city to bring together the large swathes of fitness enthusiasts who populate the city.

a marathon also graces Rio's streets once a year, to take place usually in july - It is 42km long, beginning in Praça do Pontal do Tim Maia next to beautiful praia do recreio and praia do pontal.

Other mass runs are hosted across the city, typically at flamengo park, and along botafogo and copacabana beaches.

Of course the quintessentially and revered carioca sport of volleyball also gets a look-in in Rio's sporting calendar -  the Rio Volleyball League pits the best talent in Rio against one another, which make for wonderful sporting spectacles throughout the year.
