at a glance

Perhaps one of the most quintessential and exhilarating things to do in Rio is watch one of the various Samba shows that take place in venues all around the city - Originating from the state of Rio, Samba is a fast paced dance, renowned for being a vibrant and unique aspect of brazilian culture.

Shows can range from large, up-market spectacles, in theatres across the city, to small bands and groups gathered in traditional bars - In some presentations, the audience is expected to sit and enjoy the exhilarating music, while in others the rhythm and vivacity of the music drives them on to their feet to try their hand at the percussion and steps.

One of the most authentic and vibrant ways to experience a samba show is to watch the big schools rehearsing in the months running up to Carnival in February - Prestigious schools such as mangueira and unidos da tijuca, made of an array of artists and percussionists, allow the public to witness the spectacles as they come to life.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
