A statue of Brazil's best-loved national poet, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, sits on copacabana beach, reflecting Rio's longstanding love affair with the powerful and expressive art form - Andrade, as well as Vinícius de Moraes, are just two of the hugely influential poetic thinkers who lived on Rio's shores.

Today, people living in Rio continue to use poetry to address the eccentricities of their cultural past as well as their own personal experiences - Poetry provides a space to examine the spiritual, political and banal in carioca culture.
