despite the upp's presence, the favela's position close to the wealthy part of rio still allows for limited and hidden drug trafficking, although on a smaller scale, especially during holidays and carnival - due to ongoing safety concerns, visitors should not enter these favelas without the assistance of a tour guide or someone familiar with these areas - pavão-pavãozinho can be accessed in copacabana via rua rua sá ferreira, at posto 5, while cantagalo, formerly only accessible from ipanema via a steep staircase on rua barão da torre in ipanema is now accessible via a state of the art tower with elevator. 

inaugurated in 2010, the elevators are directly integrated into the metrô station at ipanema / general osório - the tower, part of the complexo  ruben braga also has a scenic platform called mirante da paz, with a beautiful view of ipanema and the dois irmãos.  this is very easily accessible directly from the general osório ipanema metrô station.
