at a glance

the uncontrolled growth of the area was then limited as of 2001, when the city administration implemented stricter controls and a plan called 'eco-limites', aimed at safeguarding both the neighborhood and the nature around it.

rocinha is now divided in over two dozen sub-neighborhoods. each sub-neighborhood has a distinct identity, often varying greatly from each other.  some have middle-income homes and access to all services, while others only group shaky wooden shelters in unsafe positions.

rocinha has an active real estate market, with homes ranging from very developed multi-story constructions, to simple brick houses. it is estimated that 30% of all homes are rentals.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
