while some brazilian officials were upset by the international exposure of the country's deep urban inequalities, the residents of santa marta were touched and inspired by the grace and dignity of michael's tribute.

to show their  gratitude for the world's attention and the changes that it sparked, the community later built a bronze statue in honor of michael jackson, as a tribute to his compassion, arts and the pride that he roused.

along with with a mosaic by brazilian artist romero britto, the statue is placed on the mirante santa marta.    with a view of the main sights of the city, mirante dona marta is one of the most popular locations to visit in rio.

following a 40 minute track visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of christ the redeemer, the city beaches, the neighborhoods of botafogo and flamengo, lagoa, sugarloaf, guanabara bay, maracanã stadium and the city of niterói.
