The progress and pace of development in santa marta is matched by no other favela in rio, to the extend that the streets now have official names, mail and garbage collection services are available and mainstream billing for energy and water distribution is in place.

surveillance video cameras have been installed throughout the hill and despite some resistance due to privacy concerns, it has contributed considerably to the safety of the area. 

these improvements to the  security and infrastructure have allowed existing local businesses to thrive and new ones to be established.  in turn, the morale of the community has risen significantly.
