part of the ample naval industry installations established around the northern coast of niterói, the 'ilha do viana' was thoroughly modified during the passing of the years to allow the development of its own docks and shipyards.

it is located just north of the conceição island, and between the islands of santa cruz, to the east, and mocangué, to the west.

to the north there are only the open waters of the guanabara bay and the governor's island beyond them.
