a return visit in
2012 confirmed that the artifacts are tupi-guarani in origin,
but the question remains: what would compel these people to
navigate nearly 10 kilometers of open ocean to arrive there? it
would have been impossible for them to have lived there, as
there is no fresh water on the island.
one theory is that they
were attracted by the concentration of resources on redonda,
such as the eggs of seabirds that nest on the island or coconuts
from a specific tree that grows there.
