despite its popularity, funk carioca  did receive a lot of criticism from the intellectual and conservative segments of brazilian society - explicit lyrics, crass language, and sexually charged dance moves  contributed to both the popularity of the genre and the controversy surrounding it.

while many of the lyrics may seem offensive and provocative to the wider public they are not random or provocative in use - funk carioca provides an authentic look at life in the favelas, as seen through the eyes of favelas residents.
