the thematic is usually either joyous and/ or very romantic. the first notable artists were orlando dias and carlos alberto in the 1970's.

it remained mainly in obscurity until the 1980's. because of its ability to acquire elements from other styles, artists who were more associated with other genres dabbled in with it, trying to capitalize on its success with brazilian listeners.  

it was seen (and still is) viewed with disdain by the majority of the media who described it as 'music with no artistic or cultural value'.
