maracatu, also known as maracatu nação, is one of the most picturesque brazilian music and dance performances - similar to a parade in form and has its origins in the blend of native, african and european traditions.

the first record of any such event dates back to 1711 in the northeastern town of olinda - another defining characteristic of is the typical dress participants use.
