at a glance

the most iconic instrument used in a jongo is the pandeiro, very similar to a tambourine - also very traditional in jongo is the use of drums made with wooden logs and leather - core instruments deemed necessary to connect to entities of the spiritual world, and passed on from generation to generation. participation in a jongo used to be reserved to men but women have started to take part as well. today these events take place mostly among fraternities and other groups who find it a meaningful form of bonding, also across followers of the religions umbanda and candomblé.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
