the plantations of botafogo and the engenho boa esperança (good hope) were once owned by the costa barros family - the name of barros filho(son) honors the memory of the farmer barros' son.

the farmer turned over the land from his boa esperança plantation as his son's inheritance and gave his name to the district - the land in question comprises what is known as the neighborhoods of barros filho, costa barros and part of guadalupe and honório gurgel.

at the end of the nineteenth century an auxiliary rail line was constructed along with barros filho station to improve connectivity to other parts of the city and the state of rio de janeiro.
