at a glance

in the early decades of the twentieth century, the companhia kosmos construtora (kosmos construction company), bought the original property where a molasses mill was located. they built a new subdivision called the vila guanabara.

the streets of neo-colonial designed homes were lined with ipê, sapucaia and royal poinciana trees. the new community was joined in 1929 by the church of santa cecilia.

the cais dos mineiros (miner's wharf) was built for shipping sugar and whale oil. the modernization of the neighborhood continued with the new brás de pina railroad station. the rail line from leopoldina also stimulated the local economy.
