For further reading on brás de pina we provide the following academic material. Presented by the    Universidade Federal da Bahia, the study Uma experiência: 'Quando a rua vira a casa' -An experience: 'When a road becomes a home' looks at the urbanization process of this neighborhood.

The thoughts and urban practices of Carlos Nelson were based on his experience of the Brás de Pina favela, in Rio de Janeiro, during the second half of the 1960s. this was a complicated period of the dictatorship, when policy called for the removal of favelas to distant areas.

Developed by the Quadra Arquitetos Associados - a group formed by Carlos Nelson and his colleagues Sylvia Wanderley, Rogério Aroeira Neves and Sueli de Azevedo - the urbanization of Brás de Pina was a doubly pioneering activity: it was both the first urbanization of a favela and the first example of resident participation in architecture and urbanism in Brazil. arrow-back      arrow-forward
