Presented by the  Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, the study Sustentabilidade em Obras Públicas: O caso do Parque Madureira  (Sustainability of Public Works: The case of Parque Madureira) by Mauro Chagas Bonelli, details howThe first project for the urbanization of Parque Madureira, introduced by the Municipal Government of Rio de Janeiro, had to be modified to incorporate environmental concerns and measures proposed in the discussion for the Plano Diretor Ambiental (Environmental Master Plan) of the city.

Through the inclusion of concepts of sustainability relating to both design and execution, it was possible to gain a Certificação AQUA which would benefit the population.

The development and detailing of sustainable concepts concerning the relationship between the enterprise and its surroundings, and the recovery of degraded urban spaces, water management, vegetation, energy management and solid waste management established an urban project which, aside from improving quality of life in the region, also enabled users to experience nature in public spaces.
