at a glance

The wider area only began to develop significantly towards the end of the 19th century with the arrival of the railroad in the north region of the city. For a substantial period there was a circular railway in north Penha which allowed trains arriving from Barão de Mauá to make their return.

This railway line was deactivated in the 1940s and in its place Penha Circular train station was built which, in turn, gave name to the neighborhood itself.
The northeast region of this neighborhood is comprised of an industrial area located alongside the waters of guanabara bay.

local points of interest are concentrated around the key transport routes - North of Avenida Brazil is Mercado São Sebastião, or 'San Sebastian Market', located in the heart of the industrial zone. It was opened in 1960 and is one of the biggest in the city, containing large stores with a diverse range of products. arrow-back      arrow-forward
