at a glance

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Penha, or 'Church of Our Lady of The Rock', remains an important pilgrimage destination - large swathes of visitors flock to the area from all over the world to climb the 382 steps of the staircase in order to give thanks, repent and receive grace. the presence of favela communites poses a threat to Such traditions because they undermine the stability of the cultural and historical artifacts and ceremonies of the district.

An Olympic Village is planned to replace the old Tannery, with the aims to increase sporting activity and foster a new generation of athletic stars. The region was famously home to the football champions, goalkeeper Julio Cesar, Athirson and Adriano.

besides the famous church and the annual festival The district has a few interesting attractions on offer. Parque Shangai, or 'Shangai Park', is located beside the great rock, and surrounding it is the ever popular Bar e Lanchonete Pax da Penha, or 'Pax da Penha Snack Bar'. On the western edge there is also the ample, green Parque Ari Barroso, or 'Ari Barroso Park'. arrow-back      arrow-forward
