at a glance

Local commerce is concentrated around these areas, including restaurants and bars. The Várzea Country Clube, is another important organization which has access to its own forest reserve.

There are a number of historical buildings in the district, including the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, or 'Church of Our Lady of mercy', which was built in the 1920s; the River Futebol Clube, or 'River Soccer Club', founded in 1914, and an important sugar refinery, built in the 1920s, which is still active today.

It is noteworthy that piedade is one of few neighborhoods with direct access to Parque Nacional da Tijuca, or 'Tijuca National Park', located at the Southern border - another interesting fact is, that Euclides da Cunha, the famous journalist, sociologist and engineer, was famously killed in piedade in 1909, over a dispute with a young soldier who was said to have an affair with his wife. arrow-back      arrow-forward
