a military friend of the couple built a small fort with one cannon and a flagpole on ponta do tiro (shot point), it was his intention to assist local school children in honoring the brazilian flag flying at the fort and to assist them in celebrating flag day - the neighborhood came to be called praia da bandeira (flag beach), the beach offers a beautiful view of the baía de guanabara (guanabara bay).
