the second half of the 19th century saw the general area of anil becoming an industrial region, with the construction of a various important factories. this trend continued for a number of years, and anil still harbors a few key industries - the now independent neighborhood is characterized by much diversity, creating visible contrasts, with wealthy residential areas sharing the space with favela communities, and big industries existing right beside large environmental areas. the region is crossed by the anil river, which has been kept reasonably clean and filled with life, giving some color to the urbanization. there are also several green parks, like the morro do silveira and the alamanda plazas. in the southern tip of the neighborhood there's the iconic panela rock, a tall hill surrounded by a small forrest. furthermore, there are various quality restaurants in the area, such as the planet sushi-jacarepaguá restaurant and the choperia restaurant and pizzeria. the area is also the home of the samba school g. r. e. s. unidos do anil, one of the very few to promote street carnival parades in the west zone. | anil | |||
