at a glance

when the city was founded in 1612 by gaspar de costa, deodoro consisted mainly of farmland producing sugarcane and molasses. years later, in 1859, when the central railroad of brazil was put into place, a new train station was established in the region and was named after brazil's first dictator, marshal deodoro da fonseca - it soon became a highly developed suburban area.

interestingly, on the 27th of december the famous carioca musicians caetano veloso and gilberto gil were arrested at the height of the tropicalista movement, under the pretext of having disrespected the brazilian national anthem and the national flag. following a brief spell at the military police quarter in tijuca, they stayed two months detained in the military village in the neighborhood of deodoro at avenida duque de caxias. arrow-back      arrow-forward
