Presented by Agência Nacional de Transportes Aquaviários, the article Porto do Rio de Janeiro -The Rio de Janeiro Port   provides insight into the naval history of rio. In the 1870s, with the construction of the Alfândega dock, the first plans for the development of the Rio de Janeiro port emerged, which at that time operated through dispersed facilities.

The official inauguration of the port took place on the 20th of July 1910, passing through the administration of Demart & Cia. (1910), Compagnie du Port de Rio de Janeiro (1911 a 1922) and Companhia Brasileira de Exploração de Portos (1923 a 1933).

the creation of Law nº 190, on 16th January 1936, made the port into an autonomous federal organ called Administração do Porto do Rio de Janeiro.
