at a glance

in the 18th century a traveler's inn opened in the meadow. it was where joaquim josé da silva xavier used to stay when travelling to brazil. he is better known as tiradentes the infamous, portuguese revolutionary who fought for brazilian independence. he was eventually arrested and hanged but has become a national hero.

there also was a fortress in this area where a chapel was built. today that chapel is the igreja n. s. da conceição (church of our lady of conception).

other famous campinho residents include landowners capitão josé de couto menezes and ludovico teles barbosa, both of whom have streets named after them - another famous resident is film actress fernanda montenegro. she was in the 1998 film central do brasil, nominated to an oscar for best film in a foreign language. arrow-back      arrow-forward
