In the 19th century the region now known as Cavalcanti was comprised of lands belonging to the Cardoso Quintão family. By the end of the century the railroad had arrived in the area and a station was built to serve the locals in 1908. It was christened in honor of the man responsible for Brazil's Central Traffic Management, Matias Cavalcanti. The historic station hall was rebuilt during the 20th century, during a time when the area was an important industrial region, a characteristic which has diminished in recent years. |
