This work comments on the project decisions made by two architects, in order to offer a critical reflection on two concurrent interpretations of modernism, polarized by their different attitudes towards vanguard art and tradition.

It unveils horizons and perspectives that elude the materiality of the buildings. the aim is to examine the divergent repercussions, in the notions of transparency, in relation to the composition of two proposals for the city university.

This study prolongs and complements an article previously published in the ARQTEXTO 2 (2002/1), about the elective modernities of Le Corbusier and Lúcio Costa, in which the works of two architects for the University City are described broadly in the context of the original publications and alternative conceptions of the project which they reveal.
