Pilares proudly presents its own samba school, Caprichosos de Pilares, located near the viaduct, and founded in 1949.
The neighborhood spread over  two hills which are now almost completely covered by residential buildings, although it does still contain a few green parks.

There are several recreational  and communal spaces in pilares - to the north, Praça Frei Baraúna, or 'Frei Baraúna Square', and the Praça Abuná, or 'Abuná Square', are amongst the largest. Praça Rogério Oliveri Cavalcan, or 'Rogério Oliveri Cavalcan Square', is located to the east, beside the historic train station. The region has significant trade and commerce, mostly concentrated around Largo de Pilares, or 'Pilares Square', and Avenida João Ribeiro, or 'João Ribeiro Avenue'.
