at a glance

the neighborhood is home to two beaches - the cozy and attractive praia da engenhoca (Engenhoca Beach), as well as praia da ribeira (Ribeira Beach), where there is a beautiful statue of the African Goddess, Yemanja, mounted charmingly on a rock, slightly out at sea.

praia de ribeira is located at the  southeastern point of the island, just north of the transnave estaleiro de reparo e construção naval s. a., a shipyard where shipbuilding and repairs are performed for the navy - many ships and barges can be seen entering and exiting the estação or port from the beach. the beach is large and backs up to the quiet residential neighborhood that goes by the same name.

due to the high industrial activity and the pollution of guanabara bay, there is not much swimming off the shores of praia de ribeira, but the spacious sands are perfect for locals to meet up for a pickup game of football. arrow-back      arrow-forward
