at a glance

in fact, praia da ribeira used to be substantially longer, but portions of the beach were incorporated in the industrial areas of the island, and the remaining stretches are no longer accessible to the public.

the many fishermen in the area can be seen docking their boats, and using the characteristics 'tarafas' fish nets - round in shape are thrown into the water and retracted with the prey. also situated on this beach is the old ferry terminal that was connecting ilha do governador to praça xv.

at new year's eve, praia de ribeira plays a very important role in the festivities, as the barges that come in and out of the port carry the fireworks towards the beach of copacabana - getting to any of the beaches on ilha do governador via public transportation may require taking 2 or even 3 different buses, with an average travel time from zona sul of about 60 to 80 minutes. arrow-back      arrow-forward
