at a glance

Presented by the  Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, the study Memória, identidade, cultura e movimentos sociais na Zona Oeste carioca - Memory, identity, culture and social movements in the West Zone of Rio, by William de Souza Vieira, looks at The West Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, which is a region which covers several different neighborhoods, such as: Jacarepaguá, Campo Grande, Barra da Tijuca, Sepetiba, amongst others. The distinctness of this region can be observed in its geography, history and culture, as well as its fragmented nature, particularly when comparing the neighborhoods of Barra da Tijuca and Paciência. Besides the difference in the IDH (Human Development Index) of these two neighborhoods it is possible also to observe other significant differences related, for example, to the difference in the leisure activities and cultural spaces on offer. While in Barra da Tijuca we can find at least two dozen cinemas, in Paciência there is no cinema, nor theatre, which limits residents' access to this type of leisure activity and form of cultural transmission.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
