at a glance

the sandbank is utilized by military staff, their families and guests as a leisure area - many high-ranking politicians use these shores as resting areas when in rio for official business - with vegetation that includes some of the last remaining parts of the mata atlântica in south-eastern brazil, large areas of salt marshes, including beaches, dunes, and mangroves, the area is used for scientific research investigating unique ecosystems.

much of the area is considered a permanent conservation area, and construction can no longer take place there.   the site is available to school trips and it had been used on various occasions for the filming of the globo tv network's telenovelas (brazilian soap operas).

the island is rich of epiphytes - mainly  bromeliads and orchids, as well as a variety of protected species. there is plenty of flora and fauna for nature enthusiasts to admire, including the maria farinha, a type of albino crab (caranguejo) special to the area.
