gardênia azul is a bairro (neighborhood) in the zona oeste (west zone) of rio de janeiro - its currently limits are located between the ayrton senna avenue and the anil canal, just north of the panela hill and it is enveloped by the bairros of anil to the east, freguesia jacarepaguá and city of god to the north, and jacarepaguá to the west and the south.

the area now occupied by the neighborhood of gardênia azul was once part of the tijuca mill, a large farm and sugarcane processing unit, which over time had several owners, all from the correia de sá family line - at the end of the 19th century the last owner of this lineage, josé maria correia de sá, definitively sold the land to francisco pinto de fonseca, and by the middle of the 20th century the region found itself in the hands of yet another owner, josé padilha coimbra.

coimbra decided to subdevide the vast property, naming the new residential areas after his favorite flowers, which is how 'gardênia azul' (blue gardenia) obtained its name - the region developed significantly in the following decades, becoming home to several industries and attracting new residents until it eventually gained independence from jacarepaguá and became a neighborhood in its own right.
