at a glance

gericinó is a neighborhood located in the zona oeste (west zone), one of rio de janeiro four administrative zones. the bairro (neighborhood) is located to the north of avenida brasil and borders the bairro of bangu to the south.

the bairro's name derives from the tupi language spoken by the indigenous tamoio people, who inhabitat the region prior to colonization.  gericinó is formed by two words - the first, iarí-airy means top or high and the second is cin-o meaning smooth and closed - referring to a specific local mountain. as such, in portuguese, it describes the morro liso e fechado (smooth and closed hill). it is located in nearby neighborhood of mesquita.

while the name may be of ancient origin, the bairro is relatively young. it was once a part of the nearby neighborhood of bangu and gained independence as recently as 2004, becoming a neighborhood in its own right. arrow-back      arrow-forward
