at a glance

originally the project was aimed at creating an area of affordable housing for low income residents, such as those working in the service industry as well as  veterans of world war ii, the 'pracinhas' as they are known locally. the space was further expanded in the following years to also accommodate pensioners which eventually earned the locale the nickname 'widow houses'.

during these initial years the population of the area was mostly middle-aged or older. however, as more people migrated to the areafrom other areas of the city, in search of affordable housing, the age profile changed to include more young families and children.

such social dynamics guarantee that the population of the region - not only the jardim palamares sub-neighborhood - contains approximately 25.000 inhabitants  with a steady annual increase. as such, jardim palamares remains mostly a residential area, with little commerce. it has two public parks, two public schools and a kindergarten. near the sub-neighborhood, just besides the road, is a restaurant, the rio grande grill. arrow-back      arrow-forward
