The first five buildings to be erected in 1957 were the Instituto de Puericultura e Pediatria Mortagao Gesteira, or the 'Institute of Pediatrics Martagao Gesteira' (IPPMG), the Faculdade de Engenharia, or 'Faculty of Engineering', the Oficina Grafica, or 'Graphics Workshop', the Hospital Universitario, or 'University Hospital' and the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo, or the 'Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism' (FAU).

The building of the FAU notably won first prize in the category Public Buildings in the International Biennial Architecture Exhibition, and whose gardens were designed by Roberto Burle Marx, a famous Brazilian architect and landscaper.
