Today the island is home to more than 60 academic institutions, mostly distributed around three main plazas, the Samira Nahid Mesquita to the south, the Giulio Massarini a little further to the north and the Edson Abdalla Saad. These plazas also offer access to several bridges which link the island to nearby neighborhoods.

The units and institutions that make up the University are of three types: Schools or Colleges, for vocational training and research; Research Centres; and Institutes.
