The urbanization and expansion of the area was predominantly a result of the hard work and vision of a Lebanese immigrant, Gabriel Habib, who single-handedly built several grocery stores, butchers, bakers, a barbershop, and eventually affordable public housing. As there was no pharmacy in the neighborhood, he personally kept a store of medications which he supplied to the local population. He also worked to build the first school and to ensure electricity was supplied to the region. These efforts made the area a much more sought after place to settle and live. |
