due to its excellent infrastructure and amount of available space, just about any sport is practiced on this beach, from beach soccer to jet skiing - especially near barra posto 6, along avenida olegário maciel, a street perpendicular to barra beach, there are a variety of bars, restaurants, and popular food franchises. 

among the many lagoons in barra, one is known as the tijuca lagoon (lagoa da tijuca), one of the largest in the region - nestled against the tijuca hills, and extending to the joão cabral de melo neto avenue and the 'peninsula', a stretch of land that enters the lagoon and has been recently urbanized in order to create several habitation complexes, the lagoa da tijuca is one of the most important landmarks in the west side of rio.
