Presented by the  Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, the study Conflitos ambientais no Parque Natural Municipal de Grumari - Environmental conflicts in the Parque Natural Municipal do Grumari, by Márcia Ferreira Guerra, states that Environmental conflicts reflect a classificatory struggle for a more legitimate representation of nature and for the distribution of power over natural resources in the land. The purpose of a conservation unit is to identify in certain portions of land qualities that justify restrictions to its use, through the use of legal instruments, which in turn impose their own specific representation on the natural territory, which can differ from representations made by local populations. The present work aims to study all of the representations involved in the conflict over the legitimacy of different forms of territorial appropriation in the Parque de Grumari, which houses populations that traditionally live and work on site, in the hopes of contributing to the work of Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro.
