the area was inhabited by indigenous tribes for an estimated 800 years, until, at the end of the eighteenth century, europeans arrived to colonize the land. during colonial times, the area where the neighborhood is now located was widely used to plant and transform sugarcane - mostly to be exported to europe. by the end of the 19th century francisco pinto da fonseca teles, the baron of taquara, decided to invest in the development of the region by financing the construction of roads, and by giving parts of his lands to his former slaves, when the practice was finally abolished in brazil in 1888. in the late nineteenth century, a process of grounding swamps and re-division into farms improved the area and created more usable zones for both residential and argricultural purposes. | freguesia jpa | |||
