at a glance

the dawn of the 20th century still met an agricultural jacarepaguá, and it was only in the 1970s that the region started to become widely urbanized.

industries began to flourish and the population met an unrestrained growth, which brought several problems with it, some of which still page the region especially in terms of security and services.

it was at this time that the favelas in the region grew at the fastest pace, and new ones were created - at the beginning of the twenty-first century, jacarepaguá was among the worse neighborhood in rio as far as quality of life, services, and infrastructure.

what was once the bulk of the original region, today has broken apart to give way to smaller sub-neighborhoods, official and unofficial, varying from low to middle income. arrow-back      arrow-forward
