rua aníbal de mendonça is one of ipanema's most sophisticated and popular streets - originally called rua dario silva, rua aníbal mendonça was given its current name to honour the brazilian admiral aníbal de mendonça, considered to be a great brazilian hero. the street runs from rio's lagoa rodrigo de freitas, across ipanema to avenida viera souto on arguably the nicest part of ipanema beach, posto 10 - on the stretch of beach where the street begins, one can find a gym on the sand with machines and free weights that are available to the public free of charge.
