rua garcia d' avila is located in the ipanema neighborhood, running from Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas to the famous ipanema beach - previously called rua pedro silva, the name of this street was changed in 1922 to honour dom luís de brito de almeida garcia de ávila (1528-1609), an important figure in the history of brazil.

d' avila was directly involved in the construction of the capital in salvador bahia, was an important colony potentate, an alderman of the senate chamber and was considered one of the major political figures and largest landowners of his time - he was founder of the casa da torre (tower house), one of the most significant historical and cultural monuments of portuguese architecture in brazil, listed by the national heritage (1939).
