at a glance

rua francisco octaviano, a popular ipanema street, was previously called rua da igrejinha (little church street) due to the situation of the little church of our lady of copacabana at arpoador beach - it was later named in honour of the journalist, lawyer, politician, poet and brazilian diplomat francisco octaviano de almeida rosa, who was an important figure in the history of brazil and in particular in history of the city of rio de janeiro.

francisco was deputy general (1852) and senator of the brazilian empire (1867), and he made many important contributions as a journalist and in politics, engaging in campaigns of the liberal party and contributing to the lei do ventre livre (law of the free womb) in 1871, which gave freedom to the children of slaves born after that date. arrow-back      arrow-forward
