at a glance

after brazil became a republic in 1889, nabuco moved his focus to literature and writing, publishing several works and lecturing on the portuguese epic poem 'os lusíadas' - he spent much time living abroad in the us, france and england, receiving a phd in literature from yale university and advocating pan-americanism in europe.

nabuco was one of the founding members of the brazilian academy of letters (academia brasileira de letras).

after his death nabuco received numerous accolades, including streets, avenues and squares named in his honour, a statue in one of the main public squares in the city of recife, and the fundação joaquim nabuco, also in recife.
