Presented by the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, the study Evolução Histórica-Geográfica-Cartográfica da Ilha do Fundão - Historical, Geographical and Cartographic Evolution of Ilha do Fundão, by Paulo Márcio Leal de Menezes, Lívia Guimarães de Andrade, Verônica Martins Goulart Lepore, Bruna Souza da Silva e Tatiana de Sá Freire Ferreira takes a retrospective look at the area. The Island of Fundão, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, RJ, corresponds to one of the largest projects of landfill of marine areas accomplished in the city. The initial aim was the protection of the University City, according to the original project, which was substantially modified, to add many buildings to the design. The body of the landfill allowed an increase of around 3 200 000 m2, in a total area of about 5 957 000 m2.
